Dhofar
The capital of Dhofar Governorate is Salalah, also capital of Oman from 1932 to 1970.
The most remarkable of the region is the special climate. Summer, from June till August, is the Khareef season here, the time of the monsoon, a tropical climate. Then the temperatures here are comparatively low, it rains a lot, the clouds hang low and the sea is wild.
This is the time when mainly desert dwellers from the Arab world spend their vacation here to experience this special weather which you cannot find somewhere else in Middle East.
Moreover, it is possible and recommended to visit this part of Oman all year round. For people from other regions, the time from September is especially attractive, when the mountains are still green, the waterfalls lush and the rush of Khareef tourists is over.
Then the beaches are accessible again and the hotels are no longer overbooked. This is the region where you are not hindered by traffic jams on the roads, but by the numerous camels, cattle and goats running around freely, which can sometimes take a break on the asphalt quite unimpressed by people and cars.
Dhofar is especially known for its frankincense trees, which find ideal conditions here due to the tropical climate. For over 5000 years, incense has been transported here via the frankincense trade route.
There are countless wadis and springs that come to life during the khareef, waterfalls, waves that crash against the rocky shore and provide fountains in the blow holes. Here camels enter the sea and provide a unique atmosphere at the stands. A few kilometers inland begins the very dry area of Rub Al Khali, the largest sand desert in the world, also called Empty Quarter.
This can be done on a camel or with a 4×4, but in any case you should not travel alone. Even experienced locals drive in small groups to always be prepared for emergencies. The desert is big! Also recommended to experience is the impressive landscape towards the Yemeni border, which is free of greenery for most of the year. There are no security risks despite the proximity to Yemen.
Salalah is by far not only a beach destination. There is so much to see – places in nature, places with history. Also, you should not miss the water from freshly cracked coconuts, which are grown here in plantations.
