Camping at its best

Some places are best experienced under an open sky, far from the hum of the city. Oman is one of them. But for someone like me, who loves nature but isn’t exactly skilled at setting up a full campsite, the idea of a guided camping experience was the perfect balance of adventure and comfort.

I had heard about Oman’s breathtaking camping spots, from golden deserts to hidden beaches and towering mountains. Instead of figuring everything out myself, I decided to join a guided camping trip, where the only thing I had to do was show up and enjoy the journey. These trips are available as both private experiences for couples, families, or small groups, or as shared group adventures where travelers come together to enjoy the experience.

The Perfect Start: A Beachside Camp at Fins

The adventure began with a drive along the stunning coastal road south of Muscat, where the mountains meet the sea in the most dramatic way. By the time we reached Fins Beach, our campsite was already being set up by the team.

Within minutes, I was barefoot on the sand, watching the sky turn shades of pink and orange as the sun dipped below the horizon. A traditional Omani-style tent had been prepared for us, complete with carpets, cushions, and a cozy setup that felt both rustic and luxurious.

Dinner was a live grill, freshly prepared by our guides, succulent grilled fish, warm bread, and a side of flavorful rice. We ate by the fire, listening to the waves and sharing stories under a blanket of stars. The best part? I didn’t have to worry about anything, no struggling with tent poles, no planning meals, just pure relaxation.

Into the Desert: A Bedouin Experience in Wahiba Sands

The next day, we swapped the beach for the desert, heading deep into the Wahiba Sands, where golden dunes stretched as far as the eye could see. Our guides knew these dunes like the back of their hands, expertly navigating the shifting sands in their 4x4s.

When we arrived at the campsite, it felt like something out of a movie, a traditional Bedouin setup with a majlis seating area, carpets spread over the sand, and a fire already crackling.

We spent the evening the way desert travelers have for centuries: sipping Omani coffee, listening to the guides share stories about life in the desert, and watching the flames dance against the endless night sky.

When it was time to sleep, the choice was mine, inside a comfortable tent or on a mattress under the open sky. I chose the latter, falling asleep to the whisper of the wind over the dunes.

The Grand Finale: High Above the World at Jebel Shams

For the final part of the journey, we left the desert behind and climbed into the mountains. Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest peak, is often called the Grand Canyon of the Middle East, and standing at its edge, I understood why.

Our guides had already set up camp at a breathtaking viewpoint, where the canyon stretched out below us like a vast, ancient wound in the earth. The air was crisp and cool, a refreshing contrast to the heat of the desert.

As night fell, the team prepared a warm meal, and we gathered around the fire, wrapped in blankets, swapping travel stories. The silence of the mountains was unlike anything I had ever experienced, deep, still, and humbling.

I woke up to a sunrise that I’ll never forget, the first rays of light painting the cliffs in golden hues. Breakfast was served with a view, a simple but perfect meal of fresh bread, honey, and steaming karak tea.

Why Guided Camping in Oman is a Must-Try Experience

Looking back, I realized that this trip was so much more than just camping. It was a chance to disconnect from the world, to experience Oman’s breathtaking landscapes without any stress, and to learn from the locals who know these lands best.

For anyone who wants to experience Oman’s wild beauty but doesn’t want to worry about logistics, a guided camping trip is the perfect choice. The setup, the food, the knowledge, everything is taken care of, so all you have to do is soak in the adventure.

Whether you prefer a private trip tailored to your own pace or enjoy meeting new people on a shared group trip, the experience remains unforgettable.

And as I boarded my flight home, I knew one thing for sure, this wouldn’t be my last time sleeping under the Omani stars.
